Further success for NSTS in 2006/7
The National Sprayer Testing Scheme has tested sprayers covering 88.8% of the sprayer area of the UK, against a target of 80%.
Duncan Russell, Manager of NSTS says ‘Farmers and growers have done magnificently in getting their sprayers tested. NSTS has now become part of farming culture, having been accepted by crop assurance and growers as bringing genuine benefits for the environment through accurate application and increased machine safety’.
In achieving the result NSTS has tested almost 12,500 machines, bringing the total of tests completed since NSTS was launched in January 2003 to over 34,500.
Results from the NSTS data show that 40% of sprayers achieve the standards required without the need for repair. Of those that did require rectification leaks and drips were the most common problem found along with poor hose condition and worn spray nozzles.
‘The first time pass rate, while reasonable, could be improved dramatically if machine owners and operators took a little time to check sprayers before the test. Leaks and drips are, in the main, easy to fix. The operator check sheet is available from the NSTS website and also from the NRoSO/NSTS points form. Operators can use this to pre-check their machines before the test. Attention to detail can make a great deal of difference’ says Mr Russell.
The NSTS is available through 306 points throughout the UK, with 480 qualified machine examiners.
Mr Russell is confident that further increases in test numbers follow the success of 2006/7 saying ‘NSTS has given genuine benefits for farmers and growers, now we have to get that confidence promoted in the amenity and groundscare sectors. Smaller machines covering smaller areas but equally important when environmental and operator safety are considered’.
